Gerechte Gesellschaft – Moderner Staat

The "Initiative für eine solidarische Welt Ilmenau" (ISWI e.V.) and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Thuringia are happy to invite you to an interesting lecture while the International Student Week 2011 in Ilmenau!

The lecture "Freedom? Whose Freedom?" introduces freedom as liberty. Concepts such as negative and positive liberty will be discussed and used to engage various contentious issues, including topics like the "freedom of speech", "freedom of movement", the "right to die", "freedom from discrimination", "freedom of religion and conscience", as well as "academic freedom".

The tension between maximum individual liberty and maximum social well-being will be examined and questions be discussed, like: What leads us to valuable choices? What makes a choice an autonomous choice in he first place? Why should our choices and actions be respected? What kinds of actions are unacceptable in civilised societies and should not be respected - even if this intolerance means that a society and its citizens are less free by some definition? While this lecture is of a philosophical nature the actual problems Prof. Schuklenk will be looking at are derived from the real world in which we live.
